I have a problem i noticed that whenever i restart my computer that i have less harddisk space left, other then that vista works great im using the Beta 2 public previes version. Could someone please tell me what would be causing my space to disappear ?? Cause like i said everytime i restart i have less space left. i Started today i had 100.7 gb left i restarted and i had 98.2 left after another restart i had only 97.9 and another restart 97.8 and so on any help would be great.

Harddisk Usage in Windows Vista ?
Sounds like System restore, click Start > All Programs > Accesories > System Tools > Disk Clean up > More Options (tab) > click the Clean up button under System Restore. It will remove all Restore points except the last one.
Click Start > right click Computer > Properties > click "Advance System Settings" >System Protection > uncheck all partitions except the one that Vista is installed. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

I already did that but it doesn't do any good and i just noticed it went from 97.7 to 96.9 GB so it's really strange cause i wasn't even using the PC.

Well it seem to be a problem with defragmentation to, im doing a defrag and what happens every few minutes my hard drive starts to shrink and less space i have, so a definate problem there very strange that is for sure, i hope someone will look into that cause im definatly not gonna buy this OS if my Hard Drive gets smaller every time i defrag and restart my pc.

Yes i already filed a bug, still anoying that from time to time your harddisk shrinks, i reinstalled vista 3 days ago for 2 days all together no problems, i go to bed with 123 gb left on the harddisk, i get up and i have 119 gb left so what happened to the other 4 gb i had that is what i would love to know.
I know the feeling. I installed on my laptop and have dropped from having 13 gig of free space on my hard drive to having 8.55 (as of this moment). Not installing any new programs. Not receiving huge emails. Tried all of the disk clean up tricks. Cleared old restore points. And still seem to be loosing space on my drive. Hope it eventually stops or I figure out where it's going before I don't have enough space to run Windows anymore. Good luck.

alright so it's not just me who has this problem, i hope someone can tell us what could be causing this and maybe have any idea how to fix this problem or at least a temp solution.
I know the feeling. I installed Vista on my laptop. Had almost 13 gig free on the hard drive when done. Now I'm down to 8.55 gig. No new programs installed. Cleared all the usual temp, etc. files. Have done all the disk clean ups. Even got rid of all but the latest System Restore Points. No change. Hope I eventually figure it out before I don't have enough drive space left for Windows to run. Good Luck

For Vista, the "Missing" space is usually from the size of the folder \%Windir%\WinSxS (Side-by-Side). It will average ~3.3 Gigabytes compared with 20 Megabytes or less on a similar XP setup. I'm assuming this is debug/diagnostic code and will not appear in the final version(?).

I dont think that this is the case as im currently missing 12 gb while i have not installed anything new and this happened within 1 day. Also the folder you said only has around 3.2 gb so that can not be it.

It's not just you, but it's not everyone. I installed on a small 12GB
partition. I had 3.5GB free after install, and a week later, I still have 3.5GB free. Perhaps what's going on (indexing or whatever) respects the space left and stops when you're down to some arbitrary percentage or absolute amount of free space. Please keep reporting on the problem to let us know if it continues to eat all your drive or if it controls itself at some point.
At this moment it holded at 111gb since yesterday, however i decided to turn the indexing completely off and also the automatic scanning by defender so now it's just waiting im doing a bit of experimenting to see if i can track down where it's coming from, if i find out what it is i will definatly let you know here.

Well it finally stopped taking my space away, i gues it has something to do with the indexing because i completely turned it off and now it doesn't take my Space away anymore.
